Malawi

Founded by Nekerwon and Bethany Slogan while they were serving in the mission field in Malawi, INVEST, INC. exists to equip the people of Malawi to obtain their basic life needs - shelter, chothing and nutrition.

You'll also find INVEST taking an interest in the basic medical, emotional and spiritual needs of the women and children they serve.

Invest recently set in place a training program to teach the Word of God and enable those they serve to get an education and vocational training to become more self-sufficient.

Here are pictures of the feeding program in Kasiyafumbi (ka-see-i-foom-be) village.  The feeding program kicked off on January 17.  We were able to secure the building that you see in the picture to house the feeding program and ministry programs temporarily as there were no really great building within the village.  So, the plan will be to build our own building on land that the chief of Kasiyafumbi has given us.  This building project will kick off as soon as the rains stop later this year!  We used some of the project monies to pay the rent on the building you see in the picture and to make a few minor improvements - add some plastic paper under the grass bundles and add some more grass bundles to the roof.  Like I said this is temporary.
And, then we purchased some of the kitchen utensils, etc.  And, we hired two women from the village to cook for the Kasiyafumbi kids.  We will continue to update you once the building project commences.

What a day - we held the annual Christmas party for the Makalani kids and boy, did they have fun!!!  We started out with a huge dinner for them - a mountain of rice, chicken, sausages, pizza, salad, cake and ice cream, and of course crates of coke, orange fanta, pineapple fanta, and sprite - Wezzie had asked the kids what they wanted for the Christmas party and so we delivered exactly what they wanted - plus fizz pop suckers.  Then, of course, they received their gifts from all of you!  The amazing joy really can't be expressed in these pictures - each one would get their bag and then take it back to their table and open it to show the others their clothes - their was a generally buzz of excitement and squeals of glee as the gifts were opened.  The best part, however, was after the party was over.  The kids were waiting out on the lawn in the middle of the ABC campus and so all of them started taking out their outfits and trying them on and using the cobblestone sidewalk like it was a runway in Paris, showing off their great new outfits!  Hopefully, you can see here just how much these kids loved all that you did for them.  We can't begin to express just how much we appreciate your partnership!

Nick, Bethany, and their two kids made it safely to Malawi and all of the items they took with them arrived in one piece with no hassles bringing it through Customs!  A miracle!

In addition to the new clothes and shoes Woodcrest sponsors gave to the kids, the schools the kids attend will also be receiving new supplies for the teachers and classrooms.  Pat Miles, an Invest Board Member, traveled to Malawi with Bethany and her family as well.  She collected the school supplies from her church, Broadway Christian Church.  This will be an amazing gift to the teachers and the kids.  I know we feel the crunch of overcrowding in our schools here, but some of their classes had 40 to 200 kids in one classroom!  It makes me grateful for what we have here and so excited we were able to help them out with teaching supplies to make the teachers' jobs easier.

Nick and Bethany will be heading out to Kasiyafumbi (ka-see-ya-foom-be) to check out places to start a new feeding program in that village.  They will take a lot of pictures so the Recovery ministry will be able to see where the money they raised will be going.

We are very excited as you know to begin work in a new village.  It is always quite an undertaking and there are always start-up costs that are incurred over and above the sponsorship program.  Your contributions will specifically go toward paying the initial rent on the building that will serve as the resource center in Kasiyafumbi Village.  From our experience in the Makalani Village, the buildings that are available for us to rent are in need of some repairs, so we'll likely use the bulk of your donation to spruce up the space and make sure it is secure.  Likewise, you will help provide funding for paying the vilage coordinator in the village as well.  You will also help us purchase the kitchen cookware and utensils.

We greatly appreciate your partnership as we launch the feeding program, get the kids back into school, and continue with the mentoring and discipleship programs.  It is really cool how your Recovery Ministry is helping us lay the foundation for Recovery in the lives of the kids in Kasiyafumbi Village.

We will have pictures of the Resource Center and the improvements once we return from Malawi in January.

Thank you again and Merry Christmas

Update on the Malawi Christmas project.  Sixty-four kids have been sponsored so far.  They will receive a new outfit and a new pair of shoes.  We will be collecting these items at the Community Live! service on December 12 or in the office that week.  A lot of th epeople who bought the gifts for their kids are their monthly or annual sponsors.  Thanks to Tina Brown for organizing this project!

The Recovery Ministry has been successful in a service project raising $1,100 for Invest this semester!  They surpassed their goal and I'm very proud of what this small group of people has done.  This money was raised to help Invest move into a new village that needs help and will be used to secure a building for the feeding program, kitchen supplies, food, and hiring a cook.
